Winter 2009

Dear SCO Partners,

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and to give you an update on several recent developments at SCO. SCO UNIX is now in its 30 th year, delivering stable, reliable operating systems that run thousands of businesses around the world. We appreciate your continued support over these many years. We have obviously had a rough past few years; but we are taking important steps to insure the future viability of the company.

In this newsletter, you will find important updates regarding SCO from both a product and company perspective. Included are articles from Intel regarding their Modular Server as well as Dell regarding new certifications. Also included are updates on maintenance releases for SCO UNIX as well as our new virtualization solutions.

Over the past nine months, we have been working closely with investment groups who have expressed great interest in the business and who have indicated they have plans to participate in the auction process. If SCO does not sell off certain assets, we have taken the necessary steps to continue to market and to sell our UNIX operating systems as we are currently doing. Also, an appeal in our legal case with Novell has been filed in the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the court has also approved our desire to fast-track the appeal. This means we could have a resolution to our appeal several months earlier than would have otherwise been the case.

In order to continue to support and maintain both our current and older versions of our UNIX operating systems, SCO announced price increases of legacy, obsolete versions of OpenServer and UnixWare. Unlike many companies, SCO is committed to making legacy products available to customers to protect their technology investments. The most current versions of SCO’s UNIX, OpenServer 6 and UnixWare 7.1.4, will maintain their current pricing. With the exception of upgrades and trade-ins for OpenServer 5.0.7, prices will also be unchanged.

We recognize the importance of continuing to provide updates and support to legacy systems. In order to do so, these cost increases are necessary to continue to provide quality products. With that said, we have now unified the prices for upgrades and trade-in’s which now reflect a list price decrease when moving to OpenServer 6 and UnixWare 7.1.4. SCO OpenServer and SCO UnixWare remain very competitive, with significant average lifetime use of the products and a licensing model that requires no annual maintenance fees.

We encourage you to upgrade to the latest versions of OpenServer and UnixWare to take advantage of hardware certifications as well as the increased performance capabilities. For more details regarding this pricing change, please see the formal announcement at http://ir.sco.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=361470

Finally, we have seen an increase in the number of customers who, after internal audits, have found a need to “true up” their SCO UNIX licenses. In light of this, we have announced a “True Up” licensing program that will provide customers discounted pricing for a limited time. Partners who identify customers who need to “true-up” their UNIX licenses can contact their SCO sales representative for specific details and possible discounts. For more information and details about the True Up licensing program, refer to the details below in the partner newsletter.

Thank you again for your continued support. As always, I welcome any feedback you have.

Best Regards,

Jeff Hunsaker
President and Chief Operating Officer

Intel Modular Server Receives High Marks at SCO Forum 2008

Receiving high marks from channel partners at SCO Tec Forum 2008, the Intel® Modular Server is defining a new server category, built from the ground up for the small to medium business market. The product supports up to 6 diskless servers called Compute Modules, that boot from an integrated SAS based SAN, 2 storage control modules, 2 Ethernet switches and centralized, operating system independent, and point-and-click management.

Recently awarded as CRN’s 2008 Product of the Year and TechWorld’s 2008 Server Product of the Year, this innovative solution can lower your server costs and simplify your operations while offering more advanced capabilities than typically found at this price point.

The capabilities of the Intel Modular Server far exceed those found in rack, blade, or pedestal servers alone. This is especially true for Small to Medium sized businesses. The integrated SAN provides features such as server failover and dynamic capacity expansion, along with the flexibility to add or remove LUNs on the fly. Furthermore the abstraction between physical disks and servers will remove the forklift upgrade requirement when transitioning to Nehalem based server modules. The chassis is designed to allow all components to be forward compatible. All these features are built in and there is no configuration necessary, just point click and go. The same goes for KVM over IP and remote media, with these technologies you can remotely manage the entire system and even install applications and data across the wire.

The very powerful Modular Server Control management interface is impressively simple to use. The tightly integrated design allows you to configure your SAN, setup your SNMP alerting, access your servers via KVM and configure your L2 Ethernet switches – all from within one console. The interface is web based which means it’s platform independent and can be remotely accessed and also provides Out of Band access so you can monitor your servers, whether they are up or down.

The Intel Modular Server is a cost-effective server investment that should be considered by any business with two or more servers in their IT infrastructure. The ability to grow the compute and storage separately as their business grows should come as a welcome architecture that will significantly reduce the complexity associated with the server room.

Dell and SCO Deliver New System Certifications

Dell and SCO have been busy recently certifying several of Dell's next generation servers. SCO customers and partners have confidence that they will continue to receive support for new Dell hardware. Furthermore, if SCO partners need specific Dell hardware certified on SCO UNIX, Dell has committed to evaluate all requests. "We continue to have a conduit into Dell to win customer opportunities on Dell hardware," said Wilson Lee, SCO Account Executive.

Dell has recently certified the following PowerEdge™ Servers on SCO UNIX: M600, M605, T300, 2950 III, and the 1950 III.

The Dell PowerEdge M600 and M605 are 2-Socket Intel and AMD Quad-Core Half Height Blade Servers which deliver ultra high density, high performance, and power efficient computing. These blades coupled with the M1000e Modular Blade Enclosure are a breakthrough in enterprise server architecture combating datacenter sprawl, reducing IT complexity, and delivering one of the most energy efficient, flexible, and manageable blade server products on the market.

Dell's most versatile server, the PowerEdgeTM 2950 III offers superior 2-Socket virtualization performance combined with optional, factory integrated virtualization capabilities. Dell continues to simplify virtualization by streamlining virtualization deployment and providing ease of use in virtual infrastructures. By factory integrating VMware® ESXi 3.5, customers receive VMware capabilities and migration of virtual machines within a few clicks of a mouse.

The ultra-thin Intel®-based DellTM PowerEdgeTM 1950 III 2-Socket 1U rack server provides maximum performance while requiring minimal space and energy needs, helping to reduce energy and data center costs. The high concentration of computing power and redundancy makes the PowerEdge 1950 III the perfect choice for high performance computing clusters (HPCC), SAN front-end, web and infrastructure applications, especially where data center real estate is at a premium.

For those looking for a Tower system, Dell's PowerEdgeTM T300 1-Socket Server delivers an excellent feature set expandable to include redundant power supplies, hot-plug hard drives and Quad-Core Intel Processors. Dell has long proven to be one of the most customizable platforms in the industry and this is no exception allowing this server to meet the needs of a wide variety of customers looking for an extreme value while providing high performance.
