What Are Web Slices?
In Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) Microsoft has added a number of new features and performance enhancements. One of the most useful to our customers is Web Slices. With this Browser Feature you can Subscribe to Automatic Notifications of the Updates we make to the CCS Website. These Slices are provided on a page by page basis.
Adding a Slice
A new ICON appears in the Browser Command Bar, and on the Web Page, when a Web Slice is available for you to use.
![]()
Using the Slices ICON creates a Link on your Browser Favorites Bar (formerly Links Bar). Clicking the Slice ICON brings up a subscription box. Clicking Adds this Slice to your Browser Favorites bar.

Viewing a Slice
When Updates are available for the Slice, you are now subscribed to, the Link is Automatically Bolded for you. Clicking the Link displays a Preview Window, with a Link to the Page containing the updated information. Very Easy and Very Powerful.
Note that the initial Preview display may be a partial glimpse, to see the entire preview pull the bottom right corner down and out. To go to the updated page on the Website click the arrow in the bottom left corner.

Configuring a Slice
Once added Slices can be configured to check for updates from 15 minutes to daily, weekly, or longer periods. Notification with a sound can be used to emphasize updates further.

Where are the CCS Web Slices Implemented?
We have added Web Slice Links on the following pages:
- Home Page News Highlights/Headlines
- CCS News
- CCS Specials
- CCS Supplier Webinars
- CounterPoint Training
- RealWorld/Passport Training
- Linux/UNIX Training
How to Browse for Web Slices.
To use Web Slices you need to Install IE8. It is currently available as BETA 2. Microsoft is encouraging downloads. You may want to try it on a Less-Critical back-office system to see the features. It can be downloaded at: www.microsoft.com/ie8
Remember that IE8 Beta 2 is an update to your existing IE. If you decide to remove IE8 Beta 2 later you can do so, and get your Original Browser back with all of its updates.
For XP simply use the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel to remove IE8. For Vista open the Control Panel, then select Uninstall a Program, and then select View Installed Updates on the left panel. Now select IE8 Beta 2 from the update list and right click it to remove it. No reload of IE7 is needed.
